A Brief History of World Hunger Relief, Inc.

 

Founded in 1976, World Hunger Relief, Inc. is a Texas-based nonprofit invested in addressing the needs of the hungry, in the U.S. and abroad. The nonprofit was founded by Bob and Jan Salley, real estate developers who was a need and an opportunity to help those who lacked access to food. Thus, World Hunger Relief, Inc. was formed to alleviate the issue of hunger throughout the world by offering a program in agroforestry.

 

Three years later, Carl Ryther joined World Hunger Relief, Inc. and helped develop a program to train individuals to address hunger issues worldwide. Since then, World Hunger Relief, Inc. has trained more than 350 interns who work with international organizations aiding in the effort to teach sustainable food production and economic development.

 

After many years, Lee and Kathleen Piche joined WHRI in 1994 as co-directors. During this time, they assisted in the expansion of WHRI by including a Grade-A goat dairy, dried flower production and fresh market vegetables organized in a community supported agriculture model. Additionally, they played a large role in facility improvements and the construction of the Carl and Jean Ryther Education building.

 

Since WHRI’s development in 1976, the organization has worked hard to address local issues of hunger in the central Texas community by providing training in gardening for schools and other community groups. The organization aims to help those living in poverty, the elderly population, and disabled individuals.

 

Since the 1980’s, World Hunger Relief, Inc. has been actively involved in development programs in Guatemala, Haiti, India, Kenya and Mexico. As World Hunger Relief, Inc. continues to grow, the organization’s hope is to expand on these partnerships with organizations around the world.

 

Current Public Relations Efforts

 

Social Media

  • The majority of World Hunger Relief Inc.’s current PR efforts are on social media. A married couple currently runs WHRI’s social media accounts, and since the couple took over the accounts about four months ago, WHRI has seen significant growth in the number of followers they have. On Instagram, for example, their number of followers has more than doubled. Their goal for their social media accounts right now is to build their brand and create consistency.

  • On Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, they generally post 3-5 times per week and share the same posts across each social media platform. Additionally, they have a blog on their website. The blog has been at a standstill for some time now, but they used to share a post weekly.

  • WHRI was featured in the Waco Tribune-Herald a few times in the past two years for the Veggie Van and food seminars to educate locals on farming techniques. In addition, WHRI shares their events on the Waco Tribune-Herald calendar.
